Hypnosis is a state of magnified concentration in which outer stimuli is reduced or even ignored completely. During this state of focus, a persons subconscious mind is much more open and receptive to make lasting changes.
Bringing yourself into hypnosis is easy and simple to do; all it takes is concentration, focus and a place where you can relax without being disturbed.
What does it mean to experience an altered state of consciousness? It means that the frequencies of your brainwaves have changed. In fact, they have lowered in frequency, in a way that is very similar to falling or awaking from being asleep.
This doesn't mean you'll feel altered or different, even though it is possible. People coming out of hypnosis report being relaxed and often feel like they're waking up from a deep sleep. That is because the brainwaves you generate during deep hypnosis are very similar to the brainwaves of deep sleep.
Using self-hypnosis techniques such as progressive relaxation and focused meditation, a person can change their brainwaves and go into hypnosis.
To tell the truth, it's amazing how easy it is to change brainwave frequencies and go into hypnosis. You do it on a daily basis. Watching a movie or reading a book and becoming totally absorbed into the story is enough to be hypnotized. Staring off in the distance is also a form of hypnosis.
Like I mentioned earlier, hypnosis is magnified concentration. Ask yourself how many times a day you are really, really concentrated, because that's when you're already experiencing your very own self-hypnosis technique!
There is more to it though, when you want to use hypnosis for a specific goal. Then you'll want to consciously bring yourself into that altered state using self-hypnosis techniques that are specially designed to do so.
One of the easiest self-hypnosis techniques is the progressive relaxation. Counting up from 1 to 10, you proceed to relax your body, one body part at a time. Starting at your toes and feet with the count of 1, you'll work your way up. Consciously relax the parts of your body with each count, deeply breathing in a relaxed fashion.
When you're done, you should already be quite relaxed resulting in a light hypnotic trance. This can be enough, but if you want, you can take yourself deeper.
This is done by counting down from 7 to 1. This time, with each count you imagine yourself going down within your own subconscious mind. You can use any metaphor you want to symbolize that. Just make sure you create a feeling of descending within yourself, going deeper and deeper.
By the time you're done, you should already be in a deeper form of hypnosis. The question is, what do you do next?
This is the time you repeat positive messages and suggestions to yourself. These you want to think up ahead of time.
The easiest way to do all of this is to use this self-hypnosis technique to record your own sessions and listen to them later. Just like a self-hypnosis or subliminal hypnosis CD.
A similar way to get the benefits of hypnosis without consciously going through the whole process is to listen to or create a subliminal hypnosis session.
Subliminal hypnosis is a type of hypnosis that happens even when you're not consciously listening to it. It's a different topic than self-hypnosis techniques and I won't discuss it in this article. But you can take a look at the links on below this article to find out more.
The best way to learn self-hypnosis is to try out CDs or MP3s by hypnotists who have made them. Follow the steps they take and you'll be hypnotizing yourself in no time!
