Can anyone use Hypnosis?

The short answer to this question is yes of course; anyone can use Hypnosis. However some people find it easier than others to achieve a deep level of hypnosis. You have probably heard stories about people being controlled while under Hypnosis, well I'm afraid that is Hollywood's interpretations and they have no science to back them up. Certainly Hypnosis is extremely successful, but only in getting you what you want. You can't be made in Hypnosis to do anything that you don't want to and you will feel completely comfortable the whole time. However there is practical measures that you need to keep in mind. Obviously if you practice Hypnosis in the car while driving with your eyes shut, then you might have a problem. Actually it is not a good idea at all to listen to your recordings while driving.

What if I don't wake up?

Hypnosis is a completely ordinary and regular state and it cannot hold you against your will. If you were to go so deep as to enter a truly deep trance state, you would basically go into natural sleep and wake up when you were ready to do so. It is not possible for anyone to be `left or stuck` in hypnosis. During your practice time, if there were an emergency or something that needed your attention, you could easily awaken yourself at any time and simply stop.

What will it feel like?

It is an exclusive experience! Trance is a natural state that is comparable to that feeling you get prior to you falling asleep at night. When you wake up, you feel invigorated and rejuvenated as though you have had a long sleep. You just feel as if you are relaxing in a very contented space with your eyes closed. You can pay attention to everything, the sounds outside the building, a car going down the street outside, whatever. You have full awareness the whole time, conscious of everything going on around you as well as what your sub-conscious is revealing to you. I compare it to watching television in one room while a radio is on in another; you can transfer your awareness back and forth switching between the two, absorbed in one but still conscious of the other.

How does Hypnosis differ from meditation?

In meditation you do enter a trance; however you just go with the flow and have little or no control over your experience. Hypnosis manipulates this trance state. You get to choose how deep you want to go and what you want to achieve while you are there. With Hypnosis you guide yourself all the way through and remain in complete control.

How will I know that I have been in Trance?

You will have to trust me on this one as everyone's experience of trance is different. If you are ever able to watch somebody go into trance then you will notice that their whole face seems to change. They look so relaxed and almost like they are a different person. Unfortunately you can not see this on yourself when you are in trance. You probably also will not be bothered to notice what you body feels like as your conscious mind will be somewhere else, almost feeling dissociated from you body. You will notice that it will be possibly the most relaxed that you have ever been before. You will also know because of the results that you get. If you are using Hypnosis for a specific issue, you should notice improvements, obviously if it has improved then you have been in trance. Do not expect all bells and whistles because as I keep saying this is natural and you have experienced it thousands of times before. So just read, learn, relax and enjoy!

When should I practice?

Personally I like to practice in the morning as this fits best into my day and also as it is such a powerful tool that it is great to help you plan your day! However you can practice when you wish, but it is a good idea to set a time and stick to it. Once you have been practicing regularly you will soon notice how quickly that it fits into your day to day routine and the more you practice then the more you will enjoy amazing results.

How long should I practice for?

Quality of time is more imperative than duration of time. Set aside some nominated time when you won't be bothered by anyone or anything, 15 to 20 minutes a day as a guide. Keep in mind that time spent committed to self-hypnosis is time invested in yourself to make constructive self-change, so practice frequently. Also, as you become more experienced you may find that you need a lesser amount of time.

How long does it take to get results with Hypnosis?

The answer to this question is that it depends. Using Hypnosis certainly speeds up the process of change and also makes that change much more successful. However it does depend on how much work and time that you put in. The other key factor is the issue that you are dealing with. I'm going to start by making a statement that you may strongly disagree with. It's a risk - but your complete success with quitting smoking is important. So I feel forced to take the risk.

The statement is this: Hypnosis address's the very core of the greatest difficulty in stopping smoking - the mental and emotional attachment. It's important to understand the reason for this conviction. You see I tried and failed to quit smoking at least a dozen times. And each time, I experienced all the demons that drag 50% of us who try to quit smoking, back into the pack. I couldn't enjoy a cup of coffee or a beer without a cigarette - so that kept dragging me backwards. I always felt agitated after a meal because I couldn't have my regular "after meal cigarette".

There were always craving thoughts in the back of my mind reminding me that I wanted a cigarette. Like when I had to concentrate on something. Or when I got angry about something. And after "quitting", getting angry became all too common! So I was very familiar with what they call "nicotine withdrawal" symptoms.

Now here's the point.

When I finally quit smoking, using a system I developed after years of studying self help, hypnosis, and psychology type books, my smoking habit dissolved away immediately. So much, that there was never any thought that entered my mind again to have a cigarette - like I had never smoked a cigarette before in my life. There were never any urges, or cravings, or emotional agitation, or replacing the habit with snacking or anything like that.

This is so important that I'm risking losing your open mind. But think about it - if someone who had it as bad as I did - trying and failing to quit smoking a dozen times or better - was still able to feel immediately like they'd never smoked a cigarette before in their life - that means the importance of nicotine withdrawal has little or no validity.

That means it's really the "habit mechanism" in the machine we call our mind's that truly binds us to the smoking habit.

If you think about it, it's actually liberating! It puts "you" in control! And if you're looking for an easy way to quit smoking all you have to do is learn how to take control.

Hundreds of books have been written dealing with controlling the "automatic" mechanisms in our minds. And how habits work for and against us.

But what does this have to do with hypnosis?

Like I said at the beginning of this article "hypnosis address's the very core of the greatest difficulty in stopping smoking - the mental and emotional attachment". Hypnosis works by bypassing your "critical thinking" and going directly to work on you habit mechanism.

The stronger your smoking habit the more difficult you'll find quitting cigarettes to be - unless you can manipulate that smoking habit mechanism. Which hypnosis is designed to do "directly".

That being said it's important to have a realistic expectation about what hypnosis can achieve. About how you can get the most out of hypnosis to help quit smoking.

Randy Gilchrist, Psy.D, who offers the "Non-Smokers Edge" for $149.00 on his website, refers to the Handbook of Hypnotic Suggestions and Metaphors, by Hammond, D.C. (1990) which states that multiple research studies indicate that one single hypnosis treatment to stop smoking resulted in approximately 25% success......opposed to about 66% of those who went through 4-5 sessions of hypnosis to help stop smoking.

Dr. Charles E. Henderson, Ph.D. has written several books on hypnotism, did his graduate work at University of New Mexico and got his MA and Ph.D. at the University of Denver. He doesn't offer a product online specifically to quit smoking he does have a new book that address' this important issue. He does have a page online "good things to know about hypnosis".

I bring him up at all, because I thought it important that he feels that "all hypnosis is self-hypnosis". Even, he says, if you're being hypnotized by someone else or by a pre-recorded tape to "talk you into a hypnotic state". Because he considers you're simply taking part in "other-directed self-hypnosis". Ponder on that for a moment. What do you think?

Dr. Henderson emphasizes that self-hypnosis is a skill, not unlike learning a musical instrument. And he says it does take some work but once you've developed the skills, not only does it 'not' feel like work but in fact it seems to "work like magic". He suggests that practicing self-hypnosis 20 minutes to an hour is probably an optimum time period of daily practice. He also notes that different people will of course respond differently. And since no one person is exactly like another this should be expected.

Important: He also says that suggestion's are the powerful force in hypnosis. Because they are what directs the subconscious to achieving your chosen goals. In this case quitting the smoking habit.

He goes on to say the suggestions have to be "specific" and "technically correct", "applied regularly" and "under the right conditions".

Without these 3 critical points addressed, he says self-hypnosis cannot be expected to achieve very spectacular results. Of course the flip side is that with these 3 critical points addressed you have the opportunity to achieve those spectacular results.

I can attest to the fact that when the suggestions are technically correct, applied with regularity and in the "right" conditions the results can be absolutely, overpoweringly, astounding. Life altering even.

My quit smoking breakthrough only had 4 suggestions. They weren't used in conjunction with trance practice, but they were specifically developed to quit smoking, and applied under very specific conditions. So that when I threw away my last cigarette I instantly felt like I had never smoked a single cigarette in my entire life.

That's the power of the right suggestions applied in just the right way.

On the other hand, using ineffecient, non-specific suggestions, even though used in trance practice, may not be the miracle quit smoking cure, as noted by in this testimonial on the Divinity Publishing website...

Indirect Hypnosis - Effective Conversational Hypnosis

Indirect hypnosis is a form of conversational hypnosis that was developed by the American psychiatrist and hypnotist Milton Erickson. Milton Erickson is recognized as the first hypnotist to use a form of hypnosis that allowed subjects to be hypnotized at their own pace through non-authoritative triggers and instructions.

Prior to Milton Erickson, hypnotists used very direct, authoritative language that commanded subjects to bend to the will of the hypnotist using instant hypnosis inductions to achieve deep hypnosis. Milton Erickson realized that using an indirect hypnosis that allowed subjects to decide for themselves to become hypnotized could be much more powerful.

Erickson had learned from his background in clinical psychiatry that the human mind is designed to resist direct commands from a source that it does not trust. His style of conversational hypnosis, Ericksonian Hypnosis, invites the unconscious mind to respond to indirect suggestions rather than authoritative commands.

Rather than inducing a forced state of hypnosis through a pattern break or traditional induction, this type of conversational hypnosis will often begin with phrases like "you have the ability to go into a trance." This indirect hypnosis method allows both the conscious mind and the unconscious mind of the subject to decide to become hypnotized.

When indirect hypnosis is performed correctly, the subject will meet the hypnotist more than halfway throughout the session by filling in the details that the hypnotist has left out with his own images, metaphors and aspirations. The hypnotist leaves numerous gaps in his instructions from beginning to end so that the unconscious mind can create more meaningful connections on its own.

These gaps that are included in the indirect hypnosis of Milton Erickson are often referred to as "artful vagueness." This "artful vagueness" was later adopted by linguists John Grinder and Richard Bandler to form the foundations of neuro-linguistic programming (NLP).

This type of conversational hypnosis is particularly effective in therapeutic and medical hypnosis when a subject has specific goals that he is trying to work toward. For example, a subject's unconscious mind is much more receptive to the suggestion "you can become a sober human being" when under hypnosis than "you will stop drinking alcohol."

Indirect hypnosis is also an excellent technique to use with individuals who are particularly resistant to the concept of hypnotism. This method lets them consciously decide to become hypnotized and have much more control over the experience than traditional hypnosis.

Watching people's action can bring you a lot closer to the truth than merely listening to what they say (which might be a cover-up). This is the "science" of kinesics, or "body language".


Reading body language is very exciting indeed! If you know how to read and interpret body language, you can predict other people's mood and thinking process.

Some of us can read it naturally and some of us are notoriously oblivious. Fortunately, with a little extra attentiveness, you can learn to read body language, and with enough practice it'll become second nature. It can be very revealing....

Some outward expressions of inner feelings:

Openness: Open hands, unbuttoned coat.

Defensiveness: Arms crossed, sideways glance, touching-rubbing nose, rubbing eyes. Buttoned coat, drawing away.

Insecurity: Pinching flesh, chewing pen, thumb over thumb, biting fingernails.

Cooperation: Upper body in sprinters position. Open hands, sitting on edge of chair, hand to face gestures, unbuttoning coat.

Confidence: Steepled hands, hands behind back, back stiffened, hand in coat pockets with thumbs out. Hands on lapels of coat.

Nervousness: Clearing throat, "whew" sound, whistling, smoking, pinching flesh, fidgeting, covering mouth, jiggling money or keys, tugging ears, wringing hands.

Frustration: Short breaths, "tsk" sound, tightly clenched hands, wringing hands, fist-like gestures, pointing index finger, rubbing hand through hair rubbing back of neck.

Noticing the signals that people send out with their body language is a very useful social skill...Don't isolate yourself by constantly examining body language when interacting with people. Otherwise, there is no reason to gain a social upper hand anyway. This is paralysis by analysis.

Three Steps Towards Learning How To Hypnotize Someone Without Them Knowing It.

Would knowing how to hypnotize someone without them knowing be any use to you? I know from my own personal experience that I've been in situations where I've desperately wanted someone to believe me but they haven't; times when I so wished people at work would listen to me; others where I've tried to convince someone that I'm the right man for the job but they haven't believed me (I don't care it's their loss - I'm not bitter at all - NOT!)

I only wish I'd discovered conversational hypnosis sooner.

In simple terms, conversational hypnosis is a combination Ericksonian Hypnosis and Neuro Linguistic Programming with liberal reference to broad psychology and sociology and a training emphasis upon developing exceptional interpersonal skills. Bit of a mouthful but I think you get the idea.

The point is, if you spend few months (weeks if your absolutely dedicated, don't have kids and have some spare time) really getting to grips with conversational hypnosis you will learn the techniques, speech patterns, mirroring techniques etc that will really enable you to have control over other peoples thoughts.

This is not some sort of magic spell or mystical art but is rather a longstanding, well proven hypnotic practice based upon sound scientific knowledge and years of case study. Conversational hypnosis is an extremely powerful technique and is not for the feint hearted. But if you are determined to take more control of your destiny then it is the ideal solution.

Fortunately, the recent emergence of some excellent online courses have meant that learning conversational hypnosis need no longer cost the earth. However, as with everything else in life, there are some good training solutions, some bad ones and some that are downright ugly. The trick is spotting the good ones amongst all the other less effective programs.

To a certain extent what suits one person may not suit another, some courses that focus more upon street hypnosis may be favored by some whilst others will prefer those that offer a more traditional view of conversational hypnosis close to the Ericksonian model.

However, whatever your personal preferences, there are three points you should consider before selecting

1. What am I getting for my money.

The available information should not only be substantial in scope but should also be clearly and well structured. There should be an obvious progression through the material and the aims and objectives of each part of the training program should be well defined.

Also be wary of courses that offer payment on a module by module basis. These often hike up the price for modules the further ou get into the course. Generally speaking the course should be received in its entirety following a single payment of fees.

2. Who has written the course.

Often the better courses are the product of a team effort but they are all associated with an individuals methodology. Check out the figure head. Are they well known in hypnosis circles? Are they well thought of and widely published or has no one ever heard of them. Check out the forums and see what others are saying about various courses. Remember what worked for one person may not work for you but a checking plenty of threads should give you a general idea of which courses are working and which aren't.

Chat to a few people on social networking sites and see the feedback various courses get. Join some relevant online communities and groups and ask around. However, most importantly do some research on the guiding figure themselves. Have they been published in respected journals? See if they can command genuine media interest or if they are simply claiming international success. There are only a small handful of internationally renowned conversational hypnotists. You would be well advised to stick to one of these names (Igor Ledochowski or Steve Peliari for example).

3. What Support Is Available.

For me this is the big difference between the best courses and the ones to avoid. Whenever we learn anything new we are trying to fill our minds with new information and that means we will need to ask questions. Any course you go for must offer plenty of support and should ideally do so as part of the cost of the package. Remember it is often by talking with our peers that we learn the most so look at for courses that are well subscribed and offer a thriving online community as a further resource. You should expect live support. If you olive in Sweden but your course is administered in the U.S that should make no difference. You should be able to get answers to your questions in full soon after asking them.

Also what sort of support is available if you are struggling a little bit. Are there workshops or can you retake a module at no extra cost? The best courses will allow you to take modules as often as you need and will offer you plenty of support to get through.

The best way to start is to read as widely as possible about to get an idea of what's involved and the kind of time commitment you'll need if you are serious about learning how to hypnotize someone without them knowing it.
